Bathroom feng shui: position, door and ventilation in an apartment

By traditional belief, the bathroom should be discreet, not facing the main door or the kitchen, and always dry and airy. In an apartment its position is hard to change because of shared service shafts — in that case, ventilation and hygiene are the most practical remedies.

Bathroom feng shui — position, door, ventilation and remedies in an apartment

Content based on traditional feng shui belief that many families consult, combined with practical advice on ventilation and hygiene. Updated 23/10/2026.

The bathroom is the area that worries people most when viewing a home, especially in a condominium apartment, where the position of the wet area can hardly be changed. By traditional belief, the bathroom should be discreet, dry and airy, and not face the main door, the kitchen or the worship area. The good news is that most of these worries have cheap and practical remedies, and those remedies are good for your own health too.

Traditional beliefs about position

Some points often mentioned in feng shui articles:

  • A bathroom in the centre of the house: said to be best avoided, on the belief that foul qi spreads to every area. In practice, a bathroom in the middle of the house usually lacks a window and is hard to ventilate.
  • A bathroom door facing the main door: said to need screening. Common ways are a screen, a bead curtain or a half-height wall between the two doors.
  • A bathroom door facing the kitchen door: in the five elements this is water meeting fire; many articles advise a curtain to separate them. In practice, smell and moisture drifting into the kitchen is the real concern.
  • A bathroom right next to the worship area: many families keep a distance between the two, seeing them as of different natures.
  • A bathroom at the end of a corridor or behind a bedroom: some articles say to remove the open frame between the two rooms or consider relocating it.

These are folk beliefs; each school and region understands them differently. You can also read the article on condominium apartment feng shui.

Practical angle: ventilation first, feng shui second

The most useful thing for a bathroom is to be dry, clean and airy. Some things to do:

  • Have a small window or ventilation duct; if not, install an exhaust fan of suitable power, run during and after use.
  • Keep the floor dry: use a squeegee, an anti-slip mat, and check the waterproofing.
  • Clean regularly, replace gaskets, and turn off the water when away for long periods.
  • Close the door when not in use to limit moisture spreading out.
  • Use bright enough lighting; very dark colours can feel unpleasant if used a lot.

A Vietnamnet article also stresses that ventilation is the most important point; a small window brings in air and natural light, which makes the room less damp.

In an apartment where the position cannot change

The building's shared service shafts fix the bathroom area, and moving a toilet usually breaches rules on structure, waterproofing or the building's house rules. Ask the management board before any renovation. Common remedies that do not need to move the position:

  1. Screen the line of sight: if the bathroom door looks straight at the main door, use a screen, a low decorative shelf or a bead curtain.
  2. Change the door leaf: choose a solid door with a gasket in a colour that blends with the wall so the door draws little attention.
  3. Separate wet and dry areas: a glass partition or shower curtain keeps the floor dry, clean and neat.
  4. Increase ventilation: a ceiling-mounted exhaust fan, a vent slot in the door; if there is a service box, check that the extraction line is still open.
  5. Keep it clean and tidy: toilet lid closed, towels neatly kept; a little moisture-tolerant greenery or a fragrant stone bowl if you like.

Some feng shui articles suggest extra items such as salt, quartz or coins; that is a personal choice of belief, not compulsory, and not a substitute for ventilation and cleaning.

When viewing an apartment to buy or rent

You can check quickly:

  • Does the bathroom have a window or ventilation duct?
  • Does the door face the main door, the kitchen or a bedroom? How could it be screened?
  • Waterproofing: any signs of damp or mould on the ceiling and walls?
  • Are there enough bathrooms for the number of people living there?
  • Water pressure, floor drains and drainage speed.

For a newly received unit, check carefully at handover: receiving the handover of a home and accepting the area.

Quick table

Situation Traditional belief Practical remedy
Door facing the main door Needs screening Screen, curtain, half-height wall
Door facing the kitchen door Water and fire clash Curtain, keep the door closed, dehumidify
No window Lacks fresh qi Exhaust fan, ventilation duct
Next to a bedroom Should be separated Tight door, soundproofing, ventilation
Position cannot be changed Remedy it Screening, cleaning, airing

Note

Feng shui is a traditional belief for reference, not a commitment about health or wealth. When buying, renting or renovating, put ventilation, waterproofing, electrical and water safety and the home's legal status first; belief-based remedies should only be added if your family feels more at ease.
