An ancestral altar in an apartment: where to place it, which direction, how to keep it safe

An altar in an apartment should go in a solemn, quiet place, not block the escape route and stay away from flammable items. By traditional belief, many families avoid placing it opposite the bathroom or next to the kitchen.

An altar in an apartment — position, direction, spacing and fire safety

Content based on the ancestor-worship customs of many Vietnamese families and fire prevention and fighting recommendations from the authorities published in the press. Updated 23 October 2026.

Worshipping ancestors is a way of life for many Vietnamese families, and quite a few people worry when moving into an apartment: where should the altar go, does it need to face a particular direction, is burning incense a problem. The short answer: place it in a solemn, quiet spot that does not block the escape route, away from the kitchen and open flames; direction and ritual details depend on each family and on what elders or a master advise. This article describes the common beliefs and practical safety notes.

Choosing the altar position

According to many families' beliefs, the altar should be in a bright, solemn, quiet place, usually the living room or a separate room. Some commonly mentioned points:

  • Avoid placing the altar opposite the bathroom door, next to the kitchen or under a crossbeam.
  • Avoid placing it right next to the main door or a busy walkway, as it loses its solemn atmosphere.
  • Do not place the altar in the bedroom if you can avoid it; if a small apartment leaves no choice, many families use a dedicated cabinet or shelf and cover it with a curtain when needed.
  • Many people do not put the altar directly above a sleeping area or against the back of a bathroom wall.

These are folk customs, and each region and each family has its own way. The most important thing, according to many people, is sincerity, cleanliness and tidiness.

Altar direction

Some people choose the altar direction according to the owner's favourable direction, others according to the direction facing the main door or the balcony for airiness. Different schools calculate differently; you can refer to house direction by age and calculating life palace and five elements, but in an apartment the direction is often limited by the floor plan. If the ideal direction is not possible, many families prioritise a quiet, stable and safe position.

Height, spacing and size

We have not found any mandatory measurements for an altar in an apartment. Many families refer to these general principles:

  • Place the altar higher than the eye level of a standing person to show respect, but low enough to light incense and clean easily.
  • Leave enough space in front for a person to stand, light incense and bow.
  • Choose a wall-mounted altar or a compact altar cabinet if the room is small; take care when drilling the wall and fixing screws safely, especially on light partition walls.
  • In an apartment, ask the building management beforehand about rules on drilling, installation and load limits.

Fire safety when burning incense, lamps and candles

This is the part with the clearest practical basis. According to recommendations of the Fire Prevention, Fighting and Rescue Police Department of the Hanoi City Police published in VOV newspaper (23 December 2022) and other articles:

  • Do not keep flammable materials near fire or heat sources (incense, candles, oil lamps).
  • Before leaving the house and before going to bed, check the worship area and the cooking area, and switch off unnecessary electrical devices.
  • Keep a portable fire extinguisher ready and know how to use it; make an escape plan for the whole family.
  • According to Sài Gòn Giải Phóng newspaper, do not burn votive paper where it is not permitted and do not keep flames near flammable places.

Some practical suggestions for apartments:

  • Use a sturdy incense bowl that will not tip over, placed on a non-combustible flat surface; do not put it next to curtains, paper or fabric.
  • Use LED electric altar lamps or electric candles instead of real candles to reduce the fire risk; many families choose low-smoke incense or light fewer sticks.
  • Avoid burning incense when nobody is home; let the incense burn out before leaving.
  • Do not burn votive paper inside the apartment; burn it at designated places or simplify the offerings.
  • Do not place the altar so that it blocks an escape route, the balcony door, a corridor or the way to the stairs — escape routes must always stay clear.
  • Use properly rated sockets and cables for the altar lamp, and keep cables away from the incense.

Apartment building rules

The rules differ from building to building. Some management boards have rules on burning votive paper, burning incense in shared corridors, hanging items outside balconies and drilling walls. Read the building rules or ask the management board before installing. One common point is that the privately owned part of the apartment is used by the owner, but must comply with the building's fire prevention and fighting, order and security regulations. Do not burn or release smoke in a way that affects neighbours.

When choosing an apartment with room for an altar

If your family practises ancestor worship, you can consider the following when choosing a unit:

  • A living room or separate room large enough to have a solid wall.
  • An airy position that does not block escape routes, away from the kitchen and bathroom.
  • The building's fire alarm and smoke extraction systems.
  • A floor plan that allows drilling to hang an altar or placing an altar cabinet.

Note

Worship is each family's belief and must be respected; the suggestions in this article are for reference only, with no mandatory rule and no promise of good fortune. Put fire safety first, follow the building rules and ask the elders in your family about your own rituals. Prayers differ by family and by region, so this article does not copy any specific prayer text; the main idea is to express gratitude and inform the ancestors when the place of residence changes.
